Carbon Accounting Alliance launches

21st November 2023

Klere is proud to be a Founding Member of the Carbon Accounting Alliance (CAA) which launched on 21st November in the run up to COP 28). Led by environmental consultancies ClimatePartner and Planet Mark, the CAA is a coalition of environmental organisations whose mission is to encourage greater oversight and professionalisation of carbon accounting and thereby accelerate the effectiveness of the industry.

Alliance members collaborate to share best practice, tools and learnings including the development of robust international standards in attempting to identify gaps and remove barriers to measurement.

A rigorous reporting structure with realistic actionable strategies will help to prevent accusations of greenwashing. The CAA aims for better oversight of GHG emissions measurement and to unify standards of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) reporting and disclosure methodologies. Current guidance on standards e.g. SBTi, ISO and PAS are open to interpretation, hindering true comparability.

The CAA is also engaging with the UK government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) to adopt a policy-driven timeline for companies to annually report Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions with greater transparency regarding the standardisation of emissions disclosures from companies beyond the Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) standard.

The Alliance has already tripled in size since launch: 100+ organisations, 40,000+ companies measured, 578m tCO2e measured and 6m tCO2e reduced.
